John Cleese and Philosophy

Published by thewriter at 2:39 pm under Philosophy Edit This

This one is for all of you Monty Python fans :) . As you may already know, a lot of jokes contained in the movies and television shows by the Monty Python group are philosophical jokes. That occurs because the writers of the show (wich are also actors) are also philosophers, such as John Cleese. That opened the possibility for a lot of smart jokes and situations resembling philosophical questions and movements, such as the heavily criticized Logical Positivism, in famous sketches such as the Argument Clinic and the Black Knight. You can read a lot more about Monty Python and it’s relation with philosophy in this wonderful talk by Gary L. Hardcastle.

In a great gesture, John Cleese recorded several little shorts, going on about regular questions about philosophy, such as what does philosophers actually do, and the meaning of life. They are a great way to introduce people to philosophy, and also clear some common doubts a lot of people have about it. You can find them all here . They are pretty short, and is only a starter for you to start pondering about the questions, but it is definitely worth it.
